Discover Tec Pool Experience

Technical diving…all that strange gear, different configurations, different skills…I wonder if I would like that…?
Come join us for our Discover Tec Pool Experience!
Our technical divers are offering up their equipment for you to try in the pool! Never wore twin cylinders? Never carried a deco bottle? Never wore a backplate? Now is your chance to check it out for yourself!
We will meet at the Underwater Connection in Menomonee Falls at 7:30am on Saturday, February 4th, to finish any necessary paperwork, load the gear, and head to the pool. There you will get a chance to try on different sets of technical gear. Our Technical Instructor, Michael Haynes, will also be there to answer questions, help with the gear, and if you would like to try some of the skills from the PADI TecRec courses, Mike will introduce you to those as well.

Space for this event is very limited. There will be a $5 registration fee to hold your spot. This registration fee will be refunded to you in the form of a $10 gift certificate to the Underwater Connection (as long as you show up!)
Call 262-251-8283 to reserve your spot now. Or sign up via the Discover Tec Pool Experience form, or you can email Mike at mikehaynes@uwconnection.com if you have any questions or concerns ahead of time.

New PADI Equipment Specialists Certified

PADI Equipment Specialist classWe had a fun PADI Equipment Specialist class at the Delafield store today….we discussed tank valves, including yoke vs. DIN, along with taking various valves apart and seeing the internal components. The various types and styles of regulators were discussed next, and we took both a first and a second stage apart to let the students see exactly how a regulator works. Lastly, we discussed BCDs: styles, construction and the different inflator types. Throughout the class, the students not only got a history lesson in the evolution of gear, but also basic maintenance tips and suggestions so they can keep their gear in good operating condition between professional services.

Congratulations to Bill Furse, Ted Graser and Wendell Kendrick for completing the class and asking great questions! We certainly had a ton of fun!

New DSAT Technical Diving Courses added

For 2012 we have added some new and exciting DSAT technical diving courses that will take you beyond recreational scuba limits. These courses aren’t for everyone, but rather for those who choose to make the investment in time, education and equipment to make these dives safely. The courses work on a natural progression, meaning you get experience in different types of gear configuration, gases, and safety techniques, and as you become more comfortable, you can extend your dive depths in succeeding courses.

  • Tec 40-The entry point into the technical range provides a transition from recreational to tech. The diver is qualified to complete up to 10 minutes of non-accelerated decompression while breathing from one deco cylinder of up to EANx50,
    • Depth is limited to 40m
    • Prerequisites: 18 years or older, Advanced Open Water, Enriched Air Nitrox, and Deep Diver (or equivalents), minimum 30 logged dives of which 10 dives were made with nitrox deeper than 60 feet

What is your New Year’s Resolution: Master Scuba Diver, maybe?

Well, 2011 has now come and gone, and 2012 is here. Will this be the year you decide to earn the “black belt” of Scuba Diving? What we mean by that is becoming a PADI Master Scuba Diver. We got lots of questions as to why someone would want to take up the challenge of becoming a Master Scuba Diver, so we’ll discuss some compelling reasons why this rating is one ever diver should seek.

Master Scuba Diver Challenge

Before we do, let’s look at the requirements for becoming a Master Scuba Diver…..you can find more information on our website

You’ll need to have the PADI Rescue Diver certification, along with 5 PADI Specialties, and have at least 5 logged dives.
Now, why would you want to become a Master Scuba Diver?

  • You will have more information and skills on diver rescue
  • You will be more comfortable in the water
  • You will have more skills that translate to more comfort in the water
  • You will hold the highest non-professional rating in the PADI system
  • If you are considering going Pro, being a Master Scuba Diver is a great asset to the Instructor you are assisting
  • You will get to dive more during your training
  • You will make a great dive buddy, since you will have rescue training plus other important dive skills

So, are you ready for the Master Scuba Diver challenge? Stop by any of our three stores to discuss your options and special pricing for enrolling in a Master Scuba Diver program.

Study Shows New CPR Device Improves Long Term Outcome

The preamble to the 2010 International Liaison Council on Resuscitation Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care mention that there hadn’t yet been any evidence or scientific research studies to address the effectiveness of compression devices in CPR.

ResQCPR SystemIn at least one case, however, this has changed as Advanced Circulatory Systems recently announced promising results from a clinical trial showing that their CPR devices may protect a patient’s brain function after cardiac arrest.

The study, supported by the United States National Institute of Health More and including 5000 patients based at seven sites located throughout the United States, compared CPR using the ResQCPR System against traditional CPR. It found that the new method offers improved protection to the heart and brain following cardiac arrest. The system combines the company’s ResQPump active compression-decompression CPR device and the ResQPOD impedance threshold device.

The study also looked at the use of therapeutic hypothermiaResQCPR System in conjunction with the ResQCPR System. This protocol was six times more effective in helping patients improve from poor neurological function at hospital discharge to good neurologic function after 90 days.

“These findings provide a new way to significantly decrease the number of patients with poor long-term neurological function, especially when the ResQCPR System is applied early during cardiac arrest,” explained Dr. Marvin Wayne, principal author of the study in a press release.

Previously, Advanced Circulatory System had shown that the ResQCPR System triples blood flow to the heart and brain when used early to treat cardiac arrest.

Although this technology is still in testing and is beyond the scope of practice for lay rescuers, it does provide an interesting window on the future. Current lay responders only need to look back a few years for another example of technology that was once the province of Advanced Life Support – the defibrillator. That basic technology is now used by lay responders worldwide in the form of the automated external defibrillator.
